In Europe, application specific laws govern the use of ingredients in certain segments.
Preservatives for products such as dishwash liquids, household cleaners and laundry detergents are regulated by the EU Biocides Regulation 528/2012 (EU BPR). This is in contrast to preservatives for food, animal feed, cosmetics and pharma which are governed by other EU regulations.
Kalaguard® SB sodium benzoate Kalaguard® SB sodium benzoate is the first and only sodium benzoate which is registered and fulfills the BPR regulation (EU)528/2012, PT6 (Preservatives for Products During Storage). Therefore Kalaguard® SB is authorized for use as a preservative in cleaning and household care products. Kalaguard® SB also fulfills the requirement of the cosmetic regulation meaning that it can be used in personal care applications. Kalaguard® SB does not fulfil the criteria for use in food, feed and pharma and should therefore not be applied in these applications.
PUROX® S sodium benzoate Purox® S pure grade sodium benzoate fulfills all legal and regulatory requirements for personal care, food, pharmaceutical and animal feed. While Purox® S is a high purity grade of sodium benzoate, it is not registered under EU BPR and therefore cannot be used in applications governed by BPR such as home cleaning products. It does not matter if biocidal properties for end products are claimed or not. Preservatives for shelf life extension of cleaning products also need to be BPR approved. Using Purox® S to preserve applications regulated under the BPR is a breach of the law and is subject to prosecution and heavy fines. As always, we encourage the continued use of Purox® S in food, feed, cosmetics and pharma.
